Episode 23: Challenging, Unplanned, Rewarding (featuring Taylor Berry)

Updated: Sep 4, 2019

Taylor Berry: the mangrove planting twenty-something poised to take over the world.

I met Taylor my senior year of College - her freshman year. We were both swimmers and she ended up joining the same sorority as my wife Claire. Like Luke from back in Episode 19, Taylor is one of those people in my life who came on the scene and simply hasn't left.

Taylor, and her fiance Nick, made the trek up to Central PA to Virginia to meet Mason and to catch up. The four of us spent the day chit-chatting and had a leisurely brunch at Rusty Rail Brewing Company (which I capitalized on for episode artwork) before Taylor and I hit record on her episode.

We cover a wide range of topics, including her time spent living in the Dominican Republic working to replant mangroves and educate the public there on their importance in the local ecosystem. A truly bad ass story!

My favorite theme of the conversation was the talk of comparisons. Taylor is in her early to mid-twenties; she's engaged; she's still searching for her dream career; she's renting but wishes she wasn't and student loans are still looming over her head. In our social media driven worlds, she can see other people in her age group and friend group moving past where she is - and that's hard! We talk about that struggle and the need to resist weighing our definition of success against what other people have going on.

I'm convinced people like Taylor, who have this much figured out in their twenties, are going to change the world in their thirties and forties.
